Set in the closing days of World War I, the film follows the life of an idealistic young German soldier named Paul Bäumer and his disillusionment with war. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and was released on Netflix in October of the same year. The film received positive reviews from critics for its faithfulness to the source material's anti-war message and was named one of the top five international films of 2022 by the National Board of Review.
