Story 1 (00:03:10): A robocall obtained by Tennessee Holler has raised questions and made false allegations about what happened inside the Tennessee Capitol on March 30. The call was allegedly produced by Enlight Tennessee, a conservative advocacy group. The automated voice called for the expulsion of three state representatives and accused them of being "radical activists." However, the Tennessee Highway Patrol denied any reports of angry mobs or confiscation of pipe bombs or brass knuckles at the Capitol that day. Story 2 (00:22:03): The Missouri House has voted against a proposal to ban minors from openly carrying firearms on public land without adult supervision. The measure failed by a 104-39 vote, with only one Republican supporting it. Democratic Rep. Donna Baringer explained that police had requested the change to prevent children from walking around with firearms in public areas. However, Republicans argued that the ban would infringe on gun rights and that it was not appropriate to charge people with crimes based on assumptions. The measure was part of an ongoing debate on the best ways to fight crime in St. Louis.

Story 1 (00:01:15): The North Dakota Senate has rejected a bill to provide free school lunches for students from low-income families. Instead, they have increased meal budgets for state employees, including themselves. The bill would have provided free lunches for students from families at 200 percent of the federal poverty level. The rejected bill would have cost $6 million for two years. In contrast, the meal budget increase for state employees will cost $1 million over two years. Story 2 (00:12:47): Doctors at Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals in Kolkata, India have reported the first known case of a human being infected by a plant fungus called Chondrostereum purpureum. The patient, a plant mycologist, made a full recovery and has not experienced any recurrence of the infection after two years of follow-up observations. However, this “first of its kind” case study exemplifies the risks that fungal pathogens pose for humans, especially now that climate change and other human activities like rampant urbanization have opened a “Pandora’s Box for newer fungal diseases” by contributing to their spread. Story 3 (00:21:35): Joanne Marian Segovia, the Executive Director of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association, has been charged with attempting to illegally import a controlled substance in connection with a scheme to distribute synthetic opioids throughout the United States. The criminal complaint alleges that Segovia used her personal and office computers to order thousands of opioid and other pills to her home and agreed to distribute the drugs elsewhere in the United States. The complaint also alleges that Segovia used encrypted WhatsApp communications to plan the logistics for receiving and sending pill shipments. If convicted, Segovia faces a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years.

Story 2 (00:13:06): The proposed RESTRICT Act might ban not only TikTok but also other apps and services with connections to foreign countries. Digital rights experts are worried about the bill's "insanely broad" language and the possible implications for First Amendment rights. The act targets any technology linked to a "foreign adversary," including China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela, and includes vague terms such as "desktop applications," "mobile applications," "gaming applications," "payment applications," and "web-based applications." Story 3 (00:28:12): The Los Angeles Unified School District and Local 99 of the Service Employees International Union have reached a tentative agreement after a massive strike that lasted several days. The agreement provides raises of about 30% or more for the lowest-wage workers over time, affected by the length of service and current salary. Some workers will receive less than 30% and some more. The deal, which is not yet official and must be approved by union members, is not an across-the-board increase but spread out over time. If approved, the agreement could prevent campuses from being closed again for 420,000 students and spare workers from difficult job actions. The agreement reflects a broader context of the problems affecting working-class families and the importance of unions for working-class people. Unions allow workers to negotiate better wages, benefits, and working conditions than they could as individuals. They also help protect workers from arbitrary termination or layoffs, enforce workplace safety regulations, provide training and education opportunities, and ensure that all workers are treated fairly and equally. Unionized workers often receive better health care, retirement, and other benefits than non-unionized workers, and report higher job satisfaction and better morale.
