In this video, I break down my top 5 picks, starting with "All Quiet on the Western Front", a faithful adaptation of the classic anti-war novel by Erich Maria Remarque. In at number 5, we have Alps, a 2011 Greek psychological drama film that follows a group known as "Alps," who offer their services as stand-ins for the recently deceased to their grieving relatives, for a fee. The film explores themes of grief, loss, identity, and the often-strange ways people cope with loss. It is characterized by Lanthimos' signature style of deadpan humor, surrealism, and unconventional storytelling.
Coming in at number 4, we have The Lobster, a 2015 absurdist black comedy drama film set in a hotel where single people have 45 days to find a partner or be turned into an animal of their choice. The film is a commentary on societal pressure to find a partner and the absurdity of romantic compatibility.
At number 3, we have Dogtooth, a 2009 psychological drama film about a husband and wife who keep their three adult children isolated from the outside world. The film is a commentary on the dangers of extreme parental control and the power of language and indoctrination.
