"The Witch" is a 2015 horror film directed by Robert Eggers, set in 1630s New England, following a Puritan family who encounter evil in the woods beyond their farm. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was widely released by A24 in 2016. It was a critical and financial success grossing $40 million against a $4 million budget. The movie tells the story of a family who were banished from a Puritan settlement due to religious dispute and builds a farm near a large, secluded forest.
